Hello and welcome to the first ever post on the Flower In My Shoe blog! If you don’t know me, my name is Maggie, and I am a student, radio DJ, writer, and most importantly, music lover.
As I consider myself to be someone with a lot of strong opinions, primarily about music, my radio show (of the same name) has been my outlet for the past two years for all of my overly excited music-related rants. But, I decided that it was now time for them to be able to live in a more permanent space. So here we are!
I figured there was no better way to start off than to rapid-fire tell you my favorite recent releases. Without further ado:
Is Anyone Having Fun? – Mothé
Mothé is one of those artists who just feels like they’re in my corner. Their music has always stood out to me, but something about this release just feels like they are literally inside of my head, listening to my thoughts. It’s genuinely a stunning listen.
Triple Seven – Wishy
What an incredible surprise this album was! While I wasn’t very familiar with Wishy prior to this release, I discovered this album through yet another music blog and found that it was one of the coolest and most interesting albums I can think of in my recent listening history. It’s a masterclass in rock music, from pop-punk to grunge to indie.
VII – Chrissy Costanza
First solo release from Chrissy Costanza of Against The Current and she is proving that she absolutely can stand on her own. This record is full of tracks that just hit hard, both literally and in your feelings.
Soft – BONES UK
To the ends of the Earth, I love an upbeat track that rocks and makes you wanna get up and dance, or at least headbang. BONES UK may be in a bit more of a pop-era than their previous releases, but it works for them just so well.
No Obligation – The Linda Lindas
Every time I remember that all of the members of The Linda Lindas are between the ages of 14 and 20 years old I am simply taken aback. Their music is so genuinely good for their age and this album proves that they are just on the up and up.
Glitch: Lvl 1 – Sophie Powers
I saw Sophie Powers when she opened for Waterparks this past spring, and I loved how fun her set was. Her music is the exact same. This record is one that doesn’t take itself too seriously and manages to slap in the process.
No Name – Jack White
I like to joke on the radio that Jack White is the epitome of dad rock, but if loving dad rock is wrong then I don’t want to be right. I’ve loved him and all of his garage punk glory for years, and this might be his best album yet.
Evergreen – Soccer Mommy
Everything about this album sounds like a love letter to the modern indie sad girl. The influences from artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, Snail Mail, and Frankie Cosmos are ever-present, and yet the music is still so fresh and beautiful.
All Pleasure – THUS LOVE
A lovely band that I was able to discover thanks to my career as a DJ, and I’m so glad I did. Queer punk-rockers from Vermont are back with a record that is gritty and yet chill. It hits all of the stops.
The Great Impersonator – Halsey
I would be remiss to talk about recent releases and not mention Halsey. This album allowed for her to explore so many different genres, from Britney Spears inspired pop to Evanescence inspired goth rock, and Halsey proves once again that she can do it all.
